A Progress Update (Part 1)

I have not sent a blog for a while, so here's a progress update. Proof that I'm still here! And that the work is really being done. This is part 1 of 2.

The renovation.

We started by removing the old roof. This initially took a lot of time mainly because the men thought they were being paid daily. So they work slowly hoping for as many days work as possible. When we explained it was a contract they had signed, it was amazing how they speeded up. As you will see from the next few photos. They struggled to clear one side of the quadrangle over two weeks, then after six more days, they had cleared the roof on three sides and scraped all walls of old plaster.

We are removing the old roof beams and replacing them with angle iron. This is a job which needs an expert. Say hello to our 'Welding Mistri' (The man below in the yellow vest). Here he is straightening the pieces before he starts his work. He promises to work night or day depending when the current/ electricity is available.

So the renovation is well under way. Lots of this work happened while I was away collecting Helen from Kolkata. (Most unusual, because they usually stop work when the supervisor is away!) In Part 2 I plan to show the building of the new toilet block, and there might even be a picture of Helen!

Bye for now.
